History The Newberry County Literacy Council, Inc. is a community-based organization whose origin can be traced back to 1969 when a number of individuals connected with Newberry College began training tutors to work with illiterate adults. The agency was formally incorporated on September 23, 1988 and received its 501 c(3) status on February 18, 1993. Throughout that time and continued onto today it has worked to improve literacy for adult learners in Newberry County, SC.

Mission Statement The mission of the Newberry County Literacy Council is to provide a literacy program which will enable adults to read, write and speak English, as well as to compute and solve problems at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job and in society, while reaching individual goals. Our Services The Newberry County Literacy Council offers a variety of programs and classes, ranging from Pre-GED preparation to basic reading and math skills. Services offered include, but are not limited to: Reading, Writing, Math, English, Spanish, Pre-GED Tutoring, Computer Skills, Reading Comprehension Literacy and Tax Assistance (VITA). Volunteers are trained to assist learners in these areas. Once our learners have mastered basic skills, we refer them to the Newberry County Adult Education Center where they may further their learning.
