· 33% of the population of Newberry County is illiterate. · “How many adults can’t read?” Very few adults are total non-readers, but the 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy estimates that 1 of 7 Americans age 18 and over do not have the literacy skills they need. · 828,804 adults in SC aged 16 and over, do not have a high school diploma. 31% of this number are aged 60 or older. · 6% use English as a second language or use no English at all. · According to 2003 Data Trends for Newberry County, 1,111 persons in the population ages 18-24 had not completed high school. Of those, 323 are white males, 229 white females, 265 are Black and other males, and 294 Black and other females. · 1/3 of South Carolina’s working population lacks a high school diploma. · 62% of the individuals receiving services from DSS have not completed high school. · Too many of our adults cannot find and hold good jobs because they lack education and skills. · The continued growth of South Carolina, as well as Newberry County’s, economy depends upon having an adequate pool of educated, well trained, technologically savvy workers.
